Dave Phillips has been producing music for clients for over 20 years. From styles including Pop, Rock, Funk, Acoustic, Hip Hop and Country, Dave has been helping local singer song writers develop their music and words, and composing and arranging their songs into memorable pieces of art.

Also a multi-instrumentalist, Dave plays Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, Drums and is an accomplished singer. When he's not producing in the studio, he's on stage with his touring shows DS:UK…in Tribute to Dire Straits and 50 Years of Fender, for which he plays the Lead Guitars and Lead Vocals, and Seriously Collins - in which he plays Keyboards.

Dave is a student of songs that have stood the test of time, understanding what hooks audiences in and makes a song stick in your head.

When he composes, he aims to make every part a melodic work in itself, aiming to create interesting and memorable instrumental parts that could make your song an instant classic.

Equally an engineer as much as a musician, Dave studied Audio Engineering at the coveted School of Sound Recording in Manchester, and later studied further during his Degree in Performance Industries. A long time Pro Tools user, Dave is a certified Pro Tools Expert and trains other audio engineers for Avid with Tonkraftwerk in Austria (online) and for Point Blank Production School in London, where he lectures Advanced Mixing Techniques.

He also manages Prestige Sound, his live sound company, which specialises in Front of House production sound for theatre shows.

Dave is very easy to work with in the studio, working hard to understand your ideas and to bring them to life with a view to crafting individuality to make you stand out from every other artist trying to get themselves noticed.

How much will it cost?

My daily rate for recording and or production is simply £200 per day.

Read my blog here to find out why we're not charging more!

• One day = 8 hours

• All songs mixed in Atmos and Stereo.

• For mixing, I don't have a 'per track' cost, but you can expect 1-3 tracks finished per day depending on the complexity of the song and the amount of work required to edit and mix each source.

• Uploading your finished work to over 150 Streaming Sites for both Stereo and Atmos distribution. Click here to read about how this works.

Case Study
Lucy Hunt

Lucy is a singer / songwriter from Dorset who came to me to record a simple EP of a few of her piano/vocal led songs.

Her track, Since she's been here, is a terrific example of producing a simple Piano/Vocal track that really hits home and builds with some gorgeous strings, counterpoint vocal and a peppering of multi-part harmony.

It was recorded using one of our extensive Piano sample libraries and played on a Yamaha S90 Digital Piano.

Case Study
Lee Desty

Lee has been developing and recording his music with me since 2012, and released 3 albums of his work.

He's more recently focusing on producing music for sync and recording his songs to licence to country artists in Nashville.

Completely Yours is one of Lee's earliest songs, but has received a more modern makeover since trying to pitch it to fixers in Nashville.

All of the music was produced locally and the vocal was provided by Texan Todd Wright. I provided a little extra harmony in the verses, the bridge and a 3 part harmony in the choruses.

Lee writes of his music for acoustic guitar in varying time signatures. His original production of Completely Yours was quite stripped back.

For the more modern take, he wanted a more energetic drum performance and some country Telecaster to really push it into Country Rock territory.

Todd's Vocal replaced Lee's original vocal to give Nashville a much clearer view of how the sound could sound in the hands of a genuine Country band or Artist

Case Study
M@4K

Rapper Mark Stevens set out to record a Hip Hop EP of his words. The music was composed largely bymyself and refined a little by Mark as we went.

Similar to Graham's Lost Love, Mark isn't necessarily musically inclined and struggled to compose one of his choruses to fit into the common 4/4 time of most Hip Hop records.

Mon3y Rock3t is an example of working with the artist to fit the music around their abilities, giving a unique twist to a Hip Hop record with a modulating chorus.

As a rapper predominantly, Mark isn't a singer! The chorus is his vocal, heavily processed and programmed with Autotune for a fantastic aesthetic.

Case Study
Graham Vincent

Graham was my first client way back in 2006 when graduated from SSR. We recorded an album of his songs in his bedroom in Bournemouth.

In 2020, he reached out again wanting to record a new batch of songs.

Graham is a songwriter, guitarist and we began developing his songs into an album of terrific ear worms!!

Lost Love is one of our favourites from the album.

Odd time signatures

Graham will likely be the first to admit that his timing isn't the best and finds it tricky to stick to the typical '4 beats in a bar' when he's playing 4/4 music.

During the tracking of his rhythm part, some bars came out as 5/4 instead of 4/4 so we incorporated this into the song properly - modulating between 4/4 and 5/4 which gave the song a real character of its own.

The "Bond" chord

When we were looking for something to break up the verses, we latched onto the idea of a "Bond" style chord - similar to the iconic
MinorMajor7add9.

A "skanky" chorus

As if the 5/4, straight, verse wasn't interesting enough - we ended up taking the chorus off into a Reggae direction, really making Lost Love a song of two halves. We love the interplay between the guitars and the keys.

(The "Skank" is the name for Reggae guitar technique)

Melodic Lead Break

We don't tend to hear a lot of melodic lead breaks in music in 2022. A lot of time was spent crafting a lead guitar line that you can sing - something that Huey Lewis and the News' Guitarist Chris Hayes advocates as the
key to a great guitar solo

Vocal Pitch Correction

Similar to playing in time, Graham will likely be the first to admit that finding the right notes can be tricky sometimes. Even the biggest artists in the world have their producers working in Melodyne to tighten up their performances. We spent a lot of time working with Melodyne to give Graham's vocal a more tuneful performance, whilst maintaining a natural sound.

Elements

The synths used are Arturia B3 organs and Yamaha DX7 patches and played by Dave.

The Drums were programmed and performed by Dave.

The Bass was recorded with a Fender Jazz bass and Kemper Profiler with an Eden WT profile. Performed by Dave

The Guitars were recorded with Suhr MK Limited Edition and Kemper profiling amp. Performed by Dave

Case Study
Michael Gilham

Similar to Lucy Hunt, Michael Gilham spent a week with me producing a Piano/Vocal led album of ear worms.

Recorded using our Piano sample libraries, we spent the week crafting his piano and vocal melodies and words, recording and mixing his EP.

It was mastered by Neil Pickles at Reveal Sound in London.

His LP released Hands as a single, but it was Beg the Question that seems to have been a favourite.
